Entropion Repair
An entropion is an inwardly turned (inverted) eyelid. The condition occurs primarily as a result of advancing age which causes weakening of certain eyelid muscles. The imbalance between eyelid muscle groups results in the inward turning of the eyelid. The condition almost always affects the lower, rather than the upper, eyelids. This condition cause the patient significant irritation due to the rubbing of the lid and lashes on the surface of the eye.
Repair of involutional entropion (associated with aging) may be completed with a variety of procedures. Most cases are completed with a small incision just beneath the lower eyelashes and a tightening of tissues to resolve the imbalance between the muscle groups of the lower lid. The procedure is performed in the office or in an outpatient surgery center and takes the surgeon only about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. There is normally little to no discomfort for the patient.
Most patients experience immediate resolution of the problem once surgery is completed and there is minor postoperative care needed. Most cases will require subsequent removal of sutures in about 1 week. Minor bruising or swelling may be expected and will likely resolve in one to two weeks following surgery.
