 Medicare to Allow Beneficiaries

To Purchase crystalens

- Patients Now Have Right To Choose Advanced, Upgraded Technology For Cataract Surgery & Presbyopia -

Aliso Viejo, CA, May 9, 2005 -- eyeonics, inc., the developer of the crystalens, the first and only FDA-approved accommodating intraocular lens, today announced that Medicare has agreed to allow its beneficiaries to privately purchase the crystalens procedure.

The crystalens, with its unique accommodating characteristics, treats two conditions: cataract removal with lens replacement (a procedure covered by Medicare) and presbyopia (a non-covered service).  Previously, Medicare policies did not allow its beneficiaries to opt for advanced, upgraded ophthalmic technology for cataract surgery.  With this policy change, patients now have the opportunity to choose crystalens to treat cataracts, replacing the crystalline lens with a new one that focuses and moves in the eye like the natural lens while also correcting for presbyopia-related near and farsightedness.  Surgeons implanting the crystalens in Medicare beneficiaries can still charge the standard Medicare rate for cataract surgery, and can bill the patient privately for the presbyopic treatment.
